The reason behind the title of the game is the insane popularity of outstanding film by Andrei Tarkovsky and Arkady and Boris Strugatsky as the cult sci-fi writers at Russia. The book and movie was so popular that after 1986's Chernobyl disaster the evacuated and closed area near the station with dead city of Prypiat within it was called "The Zone" (or officially "Zone of Alienation") and people who tried to enter it were called Stalkers. The developers or publisher of the game have no legal rights to use the title that's why it is S.T.A.L.K.E.R, not the Stalker. I suggest you to visit this site: http://ahom.ru/news/2488/index.html with a LOT of good photos of Prypiat to understand what the real Zone looks and feels like and what atmosphere developers tried to show in the game. I had never heard of the movie Stalker before, but the initial descriptions of the game had me intrigued. The movie sounds interesting, but brings back bad memories of the movie Russian Ark. It is a single 96 minute shot of a man walking through the Russian State Hermitage Museum and having conversations with a narrator and others about Russian history. You might like it, but I doubt I would have been able to sit through it even if I knew anything about Russian history. That’s too bad.
